5.1. Methodological overview

The learning and teaching methodology developed in the course is aimed to promote the attainment of its objectives. A range of teaching and learning activities is implemented, such as interactive lessons, practical exercises with GIS software, group activities, and private study.

A high level of student participation will be required from all students throughout the course. A portfolio is required from any student, which consist of a collection of learner’s work done over the course and shows development of their knowledge acquired.

Extensive material will be available via the Moodle site of the course. This offers a variety of resources including a repository of the lecture notes used in class, a course syllabus as well as other forms of course-specific materials.

5.3. Syllabus

The lecture course will address the following main issues:

1.- The Geographic and Cartographic Framework

2.- The cartographic process

3.- Planning and Composition

4.- Base map and thematic data

5.- Symbolization

6.- Decision-making process

7.- Layout Design

8.- Making maps

9.- Critique of maps

5.4. Course planning and calendar

The course is divided into 9 thematic blocks and 30 sessions. The first block includes the followig lessons: Definitions and basic concepts; it runs during the first week of the term. The second, third and fourth thematic blocks include the cartographic framework and runs during the following four weeks. The fifth, sixth and seventh thematic blocks include the map design process and runs during the following 10 weeks. The eighth block includes the map making process and it is developed during all the semester as practical activities. The final block covers the critique of maps the final weeks of the semester.
